Open the Google storage manager, sort by file size, and clear the three biggest offenders: large Gmail attachments, old video uploads, and your Trash. Emptying Trash is what actually returns the space — deleted files count against your quota for 30 days.
Drive, Gmail and Photos share one quota, so the file filling it usually isn't in Drive at all. Start where the storage manager points.
